FOOD AND UTENSILS
Food should not be forgotten – in fact if you’re going for a whole day, you’ll probably want to eat. The very conditions of the trip dictate the need to take a small amount, but the caloric – glucose, vitamins, etc. As a rule, popular are “fast carbs” – dried fruit (apricots, raisins), nuts, candy (such as caramel with fruit filling).
But these carbohydrates are good only for a quick hunger, and for lunch it’s best to grab something substantial or stop on the way to some specialized institution – a café, restaurant, etc.
And don’t forget water – during long rides your body drains a lot of moisture and needs to be constantly replenished.
Since pedaling for a whole day is quite tiring, then from time to time the group makes a stop to wait for the laggards, a little snack, a little rest, and the longest stop, when the food is prepared, is called a halt. Pause in one-day hike is usually only one and a half hours, sometimes more. In the “classic” hike during the break time you need to have time to make a fire, cook something hot (usually soup from cereals and canned meat), boil tea, eat and clean up after yourself all the garbage.
It is worth to decide in advance with the group about where and how the camping will take place, whether hot food will be cooked on the fire, who of the group members will buy and bring what with him.
As for utensils, hiking, as a rule, use a standard set – CLMN (mug, spoon, bowl, knife), and someone from the group must bring special cauldrons for cooking hot food – the so-called kans, as well as bottles of drinking water for tea.
